Preparing for Your First TMS Appointment
Trancranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive procedure that uses pulses generating a magnetic field to alter brain activity underlying brain activity. Prior to your first TMS appointment in our clinic, you will meet with your physician for screening and information about your visit.
It is essential that anything metal on your head area whether it be earrings or glasses be removed. You will be sitting in a reclining chair and have a white cap put over your head that will contain the measurements for the placement of the coil. The technician will place the coil on an area on your head, depending on the procedure. There are ear plugs available for use in every room.
Before the start of your treatment, the provider will also adjust settings with a few pulses with the coil on your head. After the settings are adjusted, your treatment will begin. The length of your session depends on the protocol that the provider decides based on the initial screening.
Common side effects of TMS include headaches or scalp discomfort, but varies on individual basis.
