Why Your Daily Check-In Matters During TMS Treatment

Morning sunlight

As a TMS technician, one of the most common questions patients ask is: “Why do you ask me these same questions every day?”

That's a great question.

These daily check-ins are not just routine, they play a meaningful role in helping us understand how your body and brain are responding to treatment.

Before each session, we ask four simple questions. How much sleep did you get? Did you spend time in morning sunlight? How much caffeine have you had? Have there been any changes to your medications? While these may seem like small details, they can significantly influence the effectiveness of your TMS treatment.

The Purpose Behind the Daily Check-In

TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) works by helping your brain form healthier neural pathways. For this process to be as effective as possible, your brain and body need to be in a stable and supportive state.

Each of the questions we ask helps us track factors that directly impact brain function, mood regulation, and overall treatment outcomes. Sleep affects cognitive function, emotional regulation, and neuroplasticity. Caffeine intake can influence brain excitability and sleep quality. Medication changes may alter how your brain responds to stimulation. Morning sunlight plays a critical role in regulating your internal clock. (1)

However, one of the most important yet overlooked influences to the treatment is morning sunlight.

Why Morning Sunlight is Important

One simple yet powerful step we recommend is spending 30 minutes to 1 hour in natural sunlight between 7 AM and 11 AM each day (2). Your body operates on an internal clock known as the circadian rhythm. This rhythm controls your sleep-wake cycle, energy levels, hormone production, mood and focus.Exposure to natural sunlight in the morning helps reset this clock. It signals to your brain when it’s time to be awake and alert, and later, when it’s time to wind down for restful sleep. When your circadian rhythm is balanced you sleep more deeply at night, you feel more energized during the day, and your mood becomes more stable. All of these benefits directly support your progress during TMS treatment (3).

Why Morning Sunlight is Important  How Sunlight Supports TMS Results

TMS is designed to promote healthier patterns of brain activity. This process works best when your body’s natural rhythms are aligned. Morning sunlight helps regulate key hormones such as cortisol, which supports alertness and energy in the morning and serotonin which plays a major role in mood, focus, and emotional well-being (4). By stabilizing these systems, sunlight creates an optimal environment for your brain to respond to TMS and build stronger, healthier neural connections.

The Bottom Line

Your daily check-in is more than just a routine, it’s a way for us to personalize and optimize your treatment. Small, consistent habits like getting enough sleep, managing caffeine, and spending time in morning sunlight can make a meaningful difference in how effective your TMS therapy is.

If you ever have questions about these recommendations, don’t hesitate to ask. We’re here to support you every step of the way.
