Beating Brain Fog: How Advanced Neurofeedback Restores Cognitive Clarity

Beating Brain Fog: How Advanced Neurofeedback Restores Cognitive Clarity

We all deal with brain fog from time to time. Maybe you had a bad night's sleep, or you’re just feeling distracted that day. Oftentimes, it passes.

For some people, though, that fog never lifts.

Have you noticed a decrease in your cognitive clarity? You don’t have to assume this is your new normal.

Alejandra Suzuki, MD, FAPA, specializes in treating brain fog. At Americas TMS Center in Irvine, California, she offers a range of treatment options. Those include neurofeedback, a leading-edge, noninvasive way to retrain your brain.

How neurofeedback works in your brain

A neurofeedback session is a little like hitting the gym for your brain.

During treatment, we attach small sensors on your scalp. These monitor your brain activity. Then, as we track your brain, you watch a screen. By showing positive feedback when your brain is behaving in ways we want (e.g., with better cognitive clarity), we can reinforce that kind of brain activity. As with muscle strength training, more reps help to strengthen that reinforcement.

With neurofeedback, we can encourage the brain waves you need to think more clearly. For example, Dr. Suzuki might work to improve beta waves if focus has been a particular problem for you.

Over time, the information the sensors provide helps you identify problematic patterns in your brain. Then, you can gradually retrain your brain to work better. This helps you unlock the ability to regulate your own brain activity. And that can mean sharpening your thinking, your memory, and your ability to focus.

Studies have shown that neurofeedback can be helpful for people with post-COVID brain fog and mild cognitive impairment, and can even boost cognition for healthy folks.

Neurofeedback doesn’t require any medication, and doesn’t come with any downtime afterward.

As with hitting the gym, repeated sessions help strengthen your brain’s ability to function in the way we want. Dr. Suzuki creates a treatment plan for you based on the brain fog symptoms you’ve been experiencing.

Creating a brain fog treatment plan for you

In addition to carefully planning the duration and frequency of your neurofeedback appointments, Dr. Suzuki may recommend additional measures to support your cognitive clarity.

That might include:

Dr. Suzuki also works to address any medical conditions that could be contributing to your brain fog, like depression or anxiety.

To back all this, we offer comprehensive cognitive testing. This allows Dr. Suzuki to tailor your brain fog treatment, including any neurofeedback she recommends, for you.
