Drug-Free Relief: Why TMS is Becoming the Go-To Treatment for Chronic Anxiety and MDD

Drug-Free Relief: Why TMS is Becoming the Go-To Treatment for Chronic Anxiety and MDD

In 2026, we have seemingly countless pharmaceuticals to help with a wide range of health conditions. That includes physical health conditions, of course, but it also extends to mental health conditions. Today, plenty of different medications can help to alleviate the symptoms of issues like chronic anxiety and major depressive disorder (MDD).

The problem? The medications don’t always work. And they can come with unwanted side effects.

That’s why Alejandra Suzuki, MD, FAPA, offers alternative treatment options, such as drug-free transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). She has extensive experience helping people with anxiety and major depressive disorder (depression). Here at Americas TMS Center, she works with you to find treatment that helps to alleviate your symptoms.

TMS 101

Transcranial magnetic stimulation uses magnetic pulses to reach through your skull and stimulate activity in parts of your brain.

It’s completely noninvasive, meaning it doesn’t require any incisions or injections. And you don’t need to take any medication before, during, or after treatment. That means you can avoid the side effects that often come with depression and anxiety meds, like nausea, fatigue, or reduced sex drive.

During treatment, you relax in a chair while you wear a specialized headset. You might feel a tapping sensation or hear clicking, but most people report that TMS isn’t overly uncomfortable. Plus, any unwelcome sensations tend to dissipate as you get more treatment.

As the TMS goes to work, the magnetic energy affects activity in the parts of your brain Dr. Suzuki targets. For many people, that means notable symptom relief — without any medication.

TMS for MDD, and especially TRD

TMS can help with a variety of conditions, but its leading impact is for people with major depressive disorder. Specifically, it’s becoming a go-to treatment for people with treatment-resistant depression (TRD). If your depression hasn’t responded to medication, you might have TRD.

In February 2025, a report was released that looked at almost 2,500 abstracts and manuscripts about using TMS for depression. It found that, “TMS continues to demonstrate broad evidence for safety and efficacy in treating depression.”

TMS for anxiety

If you live with chronic anxiety, you likely have generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), so you may want to consider TMS.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation has been less widely studied for anxiety, but that doesn’t mean it’s less effective. A comprehensive review from last year reported that TMS had a positive impact on people with GAD.

You’re not stuck living with symptoms or side effects of a medication. To explore TMS for yourself or a family member, book a consultation with Dr. Suzuki. Call our office or schedule an appointment online today.
