MeRT Q&A
What is MeRT?
Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy (MeRT) is a personalized form of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) that uses magnetic pulses to influence activity in targeted areas of your brain. Unlike conventional TMS protocols, MeRT uses information about your individual brain activity to help customize treatment.
MeRT begins with an electroencephalogram (EEG), a noninvasive test that measures your brain's electrical activity. This information helps identify patterns in brain function and guides the treatment protocol used to deliver magnetic stimulation.
At Americas TMS Center, the team offers MeRT as an advanced neuromodulation option designed to provide individualized treatment based on how your brain is functioning.
How is MeRT different from traditional TMS?
Traditional TMS uses repetitive magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain involved in mood and other functions. MeRT builds on the principles of TMS while taking a more individualized approach.
Before treatment, your provider collects information about your brain activity using EEG testing. Specialized analysis helps determine treatment parameters based on your unique brain patterns rather than relying solely on a standardized protocol.
Like traditional TMS, MeRT is noninvasive and doesn't require surgery or implanted devices. Treatment involves positioning a magnetic coil against your scalp, where it delivers carefully controlled magnetic pulses to targeted areas of the cerebral cortex.
Can MeRT help with PTSD?
MeRT represents an important new treatment option for people living with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In June 2026, the MeRT System received FDA clearance as an adjunct treatment for adults with PTSD.
PTSD can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Symptoms vary considerably from person to person, but may include:
- Intrusive or distressing memories
- Nightmares
- Avoidance of trauma reminders
- Difficulty sleeping
- Irritability
- Problems concentrating
- Feeling constantly alert or on edge
- Changes in mood or thinking
- Emotional detachment
PTSD can affect your work, relationships, sleep, and overall quality of life. MeRT provides a noninvasive treatment approach that can be incorporated into a broader PTSD treatment plan.
What happens during MeRT treatment?
Your MeRT treatment starts with a comprehensive evaluation. The Americas TMS Center team reviews your symptoms, medical history, previous treatments, and other factors to determine whether MeRT is appropriate for you.
EEG testing measures patterns of electrical activity in your brain. Your results are then used to help develop an individualized treatment protocol.
During treatment, you remain awake and seated comfortably while a magnetic coil delivers pulses through your scalp. These magnetic fields stimulate targeted regions of the cerebral cortex without surgery or anesthesia.
Because MeRT is intended as an adjunct treatment for PTSD, your provider may recommend using it alongside other components of your mental health care. Your treatment schedule and overall care plan depend on your individual needs and response to therapy.
